The other evening, one of my girlfriends and I went out for dinner and a movie. Diner was hilarious as it always is when we are together. The movie is more the interesting event. We went to see “Hidden Figures”. Sold out crowd, which was perfect, as it is a movie that deserves such a reception. It was the first movie in a long time at which people applauded at the end! It’s about three African American women who are hyper competent in high order math, working for NASA in the early 60’s. Such an empowering movie…..every young woman needs to see this story!
For me, it had special relevance. There were numerous, I mean a lot, of scenarios in the film where you could very easily replace black women with Transwoman, and the struggles are the same. That’s where we are at….the same place as black women were in the 1960’s? At times, it was actually hard to watch. Fortunately, the movie had a protagonist (Kevin Costner) that took charge of some of the stupidity (in my humble opinion). Case in point, dealing with the bathroom issue, he admonished his staff for having issues, yelling “at NASA, we all pee the same colour”. PERFECT.
Anyway, it is a great story, excellent writing, acting and directing. You need to go see this movie
